Outreach
At the Photonics Engineering Group, we believe that science shouldn’t be confined to the laboratory. Light is the tool transforming the 21st century, from communications to medicine. Through our outreach activities, we aim to bridge the gap between academic research and society, translating complex concepts into relatable experiences and demonstrating how photonics is shaping our future.
Our activities

La Fotónica se mueve por Cantabria
Teaching a set of up to 6 interactive mini workshops in the classrooms of primary and secondary schools with delivery of photonic informative material to the school.
La Fotónica se mueve por Cantabria
The activity consists of a series of up to six mini-workshops that demonstrate, through simple experiments, the applications of photonics in telecommunications, industrial process control, medical diagnostics, and more. With experiments involving light reflection, color, polarization, fluorescence, diffraction, thermal imaging, and other techniques, we will show you what lies behind the term “photonics.”

Taller Teleco
A treasure hunt aimed at secondary school groups that includes challenges, experiments and technological challenges related to Telecommunications.
Taller Teleco
What is artificial intelligence? Are waves polarized like our politicians? How do cars use their cameras to see in 3D? Will you be able to find our secret radio station? What do the inner workings of microchips look like under a microscope? Fiber optics in the internet and in our health?…
The workshop consists of a treasure hunt that includes challenges, experiments, and technological puzzles related to telecommunications, using the devices, equipment, and instruments of the research groups at the University of Cantabria. This activity is aimed at secondary school groups in Cantabria.
The challenge focuses on overcoming as many challenges as possible in 60 minutes, in teams of three to five members. At the end of the time, the number of challenges completed by each team is tallied, and the top teams receive a small prize.

European Researchers’ Night
On the last Friday of September, the research staff of the University of Cantabria fill the Plaza de Pombo in the center of Santander with demonstrations, experiments and workshops.
European Researchers’ Night
The European Researchers’ Night is a pan-European event held in over 460 European cities, promoted by the European Union to bring science closer to society and increase young people’s interest in science. Its aim is to highlight the role of researchers and the importance of their work for the well-being of society.
On the last Friday of September, researchers from the University of Cantabria fill Pombo Square in the center of Santander with demonstrations, experiments, and workshops.

Day of Light
Every May 16th we celebrate the International Day of Light with different activities at the ETSI Industrial and Telecommunications Engineers of the University of Cantabria.
International Day of Light
Each year, the Photonic Engineering group organizes a commemorative event focusing on the most spectacular applications and effects of light, with practical demonstrations and workshops to celebrate the International Day of Light (May 16th).
